Kasatkina’s game should suit the slow hardcourt conditions at Indian Wells but world number 70 Tatjana Maria is a wily veteran who will know full well that her opponent is vulnerable at this moment in time. The German beat Jasmine Paolini in straight sets on Thursday for an improvement on some recent average form on tour but this first meeting with Kasatkina should be, in normal service, too steep a climb.
