THE PREDICTION

This is a tricky call as world number eight Daria Kasatkina starts a little cold in the second round of Indian Wells. The 25-year-old has lost four of her last six matches since finishing runner-up to Belinda Bencic at Adelaide 2, where she beat some excellent players before totally capitulating in an odd final. Kasatkina’s game should suit the slow hardcourt conditions at Indian Wells but world number 70 Tatjana Maria is a wily veteran who will know full well that her opponent is vulnerable at this moment in time. The German beat Jasmine Paolini in straight sets on Thursday for an improvement on some recent average form on tour but this first meeting with Kasatkina should be, in normal service, too steep a climb. Leave this match out of an accumulator considering Kastakina’s poor form but back the Russian to get it right this time with an outright win.
