Kurdish women’s group accuses Tehran of using chemical gas against women

Tehran has used chemical gas against female students in Iran, Kurdistan Women’s Communities (KJK) said in a statement on Monday following the recent wave of suspected poison attacks that have affected hundreds of female students in the country, including Kurdish-populated areas in eastern Iran.

KJK stated that Iran has organised these poisoning events to frighten and intimidate young women, to drive them away from universities in order to confine them to their homes.

The women’s union recalled that Turkey and Iraq have both resorted to chemical attacks against Kurdish people in the past.

The Kurdish organisation claimed that the Iranian state is not in fact investigating the poisoning incidents and is trying to cover them up by arresting and suspending a number of academics.

“Besides it cannot be a coincidence that such incidents happened in all universities in Iran in one month. This makes it obvious that even though the Iranian government behaves as if it had no information about those events and is seeking those responsible for them, such attacks can be organised only by a state in that fashion. This is an attempt at a massive massacre,” the KJK said.

Defining Iran’s policies as tyrannical and misogynistic, the KJK said that Iran aims to strengthen to its authority by treating women harshly.

The women’s group argued that if Iran were to improve the freedom of women and the ability of people to live together on the basis of equality, this would strongly impact the women and the societies of the Middle East and the world.
