LANCASTER — Ambitious runners or walkers who would like to raise money for the Antelope Valley Family YMCA can register for the 15th annual Turkey Trot 5-kilometer/10K to be held Thursday, which is also Thanksgiving. Children 12 and younger can sign up for the 1K Gobble Wobble Fun Run on Wednesday.
The 1K Gobble Wobble Fun Run is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the YMCA, at 43001 10th St. West.
The 5K and 10K Turkey Trot are scheduled for 8 a.m. Thursday, also at the YMCA.
All runners receive a race T-shirt, finisher’s medal and swag bag.
“We are much further ahead as of today than we have ever been in all 15 Turkey Trots,” AV Family YMCA Executive Director Cynthia Lathrop said Monday. “I hope everybody can come out and join us this year.”
As of Monday the combined registration for the Gobble Wobble Fun Run, Turkey Trot and dogs was 496.
That number is expected to grow as between 100 to 250 people register Wednesday night or Thursday morning for the Turkey Trot.
The Turkey Trot and Gobble Wobble Fun Run are the AV Family YMCA’s biggest fundraisers of the year.
This year’s goal is $55,000. As of Monday morning they were at $53,500, Lathrop said.
All funds remain in the Antelope Valley, supporting the community through programs such as licensed child care, swim lessons, membership and youth enrichment programs such as Youth in Government and resident camp.
Today is the last day to register online and receive a $5 discount. Registration for the 10K Turkey Trot costs $55 per person. Registration for the 5K Turkey Trot costs $45 per person. Registration for the 1K Gobble Wobble Fun Run costs $25 per person for ages 12 and younger. In-person registration starts Wednesday and costs $60 for the 10K Turkey Trot; $50 for the 5K Turkey Trot; and $25 for the 1K Gobble Wobble Fun Run.
Participants can register their dogs for $15. The dogs will also get their very own medal after they cross the finish line with their handler.
“Last year we had about 15 officially registered even though we had more who were participating,” Lathrop said. “As of today we have 23 registered.”
